Welcome to the NEW City of Warr Acres Web Site

Recycling Has Returned to Warr Acres
After the City had to shut down the previous recycling program due to abuse, a group of citizens has banded together and volunteered to assist with manning a new recycling program.  On the first Saturday of each month, between the hours of 9am and 4pm, and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm.  A group of volunteers will be staffing the recycling project to keep it at no cost to the City for employees.  This will take place at Jesse Simmons Park which is located at NW 33rd and Hammond.  Recycled items can be plastic (#1 and #2), aluminum and tin cans.  Clear and colored glass items may also be recycled.  Statistically people who recycle end up with about 17% less trash to put out for the sanitation crews.  The police department will be patrolling for any illegal dumping which carries a stiff fine.

School is Back in Session

Schools have begun the 2008-2009 school year. Please pay special attention to the active school zones and crosswalks. Children are out walking to the bus stops and to school. We ask that you pay special attention in school areas so kids can make it safely to and from school. School zone speeding carries a hefty fine, and endangers the children and parents walking in the area and at crosswalks. Be aware of school busses and the flashing lights. It is a stiff penalty for passing a bus when the flashing lights are active, even when it is on the other side of the street. Help to keep Warr Acres a safe place for our children to go to school, and do your part by being a safe motorist.

Oklahoma Landfill Produces Renewable Energy
Waste Connections, Inc., contracted with Timberline Energy to produce a renewable fuel from landfill gas generated at its Oklahoma City Landfill which is located off Council Road and I-40. This landfill is used by several local municipalities including Warr Acres. The fuel is then delivered to the adjacent PowerSmith Cogeneration Project or Southern Star Gas Pipeline. Waste Connections is proud to offer a unique and beneficial energy product to customers that reduces dependence on foreign fossil fuels. The project also underscores Waste Connections, Timberline’s, and PowerSmith’s commitment to the environment and their drive to invest in renewable forms of energy.

Final Payment on the MacArthur Widening Project
The City Council has approved the final payment of approximately $343,800 for the MacArthur widening project.  This is the second half of the City’s 20% local match.  Federal funds of 80% were appropriated to Warr Acres for the $3.4 million project which is now complete and is a wonderful improvement to our City.  There were several problems that had to be addressed which would have cost the City a much larger amount.  With the coordination of the widening project through ACOG (Association of Central Oklahoma Governments) the City spent much less money than what it would have cost to fix the drainage issues and other problems.  This was a great example of the City and State working together for a common good, and saving the City money in the process.

Keep Your Tax Dollars in Warr Acres
April 1st, 2008 marked the date of the sales tax increase in Warr Acres. Residents voted to approve a one cent sales tax increase with half designated for public safety. Fight for sales tax revenue on your delivery, online and catalog orders. Residents of Warr Acres can help the city and themselves by insisting retailers charge the accurate sales tax amount on items delivered to their homes. Many retailers use data systems that calculate sales tax based on zip code. The zip codes in Warr Acres 73122 and 73132 are shared with Oklahoma City and data systems usually charge the Oklahoma city tax rate instead of the Warr Acres rate. This means your tax dollars are going to Oklahoma City instead of helping improve your community in Warr Acres. Insist the cashier or customer service representative use the correct Warr Acres tax rate of 8.5% instead of Oklahoma City's tax rate. You'll ensure that the sales tax will go to Warr Acres for use on capital improvements and general operations. If you have encountered a problem, please contact City Hall.
