The Warr Acres Fire Department was organized in 1959, with run reports in hand back to that date. Until that time, fire protection was supplied by neighboring cities. It was around that time there was a devastating fire at a children’s shelter on NW 52
nd St. in the City of Warr Acres. Several children died due to the fact that response was delayed due to calls in the neighboring cities own jurisdictions The result of this incident was the formation of the Warr Acres Fire Department. In the early days of the departments organization, it was a volunteer department with one truck. The location was different from the current location. The first location was at 4213 N St. Charles which is now the location of a local automotive repair shop. The original fire truck was a 1959 Boardman 500 gpm pumper. Over the years, the department has transitioned in many ways. The fire station was moved to its current location at 5930 NW 49
th St. in 1962, but even that is a story. The first building was basically the northwest end of the current City Hall, what is now our city clerk’s office; a one bay small building. After many remodels, (latest being 1985), the current station now has 4 bays, two-story with living quarters upstairs and administrative offices, workout room, and reception downstairs. Members of our department have changed also, from an all-volunteer to now all paid 17 member force. The department calls have increased tremendously since the inception. The department responds to over 1200 calls a year ranging from minor medical calls to major medical, along with all types of fires, public service calls to fire prevention presentations. The department personnel became EMT certified in the 1980's. This department also fills in whenever any other city department needs assistance.
