The Warr Acres Police Department sponsors a Law Enforcement explorer post which provides an opportunity for youth to experience first hand the career of law enforcement. Exploring is a division of the Boy Scouts of America and is designed for career exploration. Exploring is open to young men and women who are at least 14 years old (and completed the 8th grade) up to 21. Explorer Post 637 provides an environment where the Explorers participate in training with the police officers and usually move on to careers in law enforcement.
The Explorer Cadets receive training in the areas of basic legal principles, communications, firearms, defensive tactics, arrest procedures, patrol, traffic enforcement, community relations, crime prevention and first-aid and CPR. This training mirrors the training received by police officers in an attempt to prepare the cadets for future law enforcement careers. Once the cadets have completed the basic required training and reached the age of 18, they are eligible to participate in the ride-along program. This program provided the cadets first hand experience working alongside the patrol officers. Many of our Explorer Cadets have gone on to become police officers, detectives and even police chiefs.
